Practice: Giving Instructions

Instructie geven

The imperative (gebiedende wijs) is used to give instructions, advice, and commands โ€” essential in healthcare settings. Dutch has a jij/je form (informal) and a u form (formal), and separable verbs follow their own split pattern in commands.

Key rules for Giving Instructions

Rule 1 โ€” jij/je imperative: use the verb stem

The informal imperative is simply the verb stem โ€” the infinitive minus -en, with no -t ending. No subject pronoun is needed.

Rule 2 โ€” u imperative: stem + t (formal)

The formal imperative uses the third-person singular present tense โ€” the verb stem plus -t. The pronoun u is stated after the verb.

Rule 3 โ€” Separable verbs in the imperative

With a separable verb, put the prefix-less stem in position 1 and move the prefix to the very end โ€” exactly as in a normal main clause.
