When a thing (not a person) has already been mentioned, Dutch replaces it with a pronoun. Which pronoun depends on the gender of the noun (de-word or het-word) and whether it is the subject or object of the sentence.
De rok is mooi. — Hij is mooi.— The skirt is beautiful. — It is beautiful.
Wil je de rok passen? — Wil je hem passen?— Do you want to try on the skirt? — Do you want to try it on?
Het vest past goed. — Het past goed bij de rok.— The cardigan fits well. — It goes well with the skirt.
Ik vind het vest mooi. — Ik vind het mooi.— I find the cardigan nice. — I find it nice.
De bruine laarzen zijn een beetje te groot. — Ze zijn een beetje te groot.— The brown boots are a bit too big. — They are a bit too big.
We hebben de bruine laarzen niet in maat 38. — We hebben ze niet in maat 38.— We don't have the brown boots in size 38. — We don't have them in size 38.
