Practice: Adjectives

Bijvoeglijke naamwoorden

Dutch adjectives placed before a noun almost always get an -e ending โ€” with one important exception: a het-word combined with the indefinite article een takes no ending.

Key rules for Adjectives

Attributive adjectives โ€” add -e before a noun

When an adjective comes directly before a noun, add -e. This applies to all de-words (always) and to het-words with a definite article.

Predicative adjectives โ€” no ending after zijn

When an adjective follows zijn (to be) or another linking verb, it is predicative and never gets an -e ending, regardless of the noun's article.
