Dutch prepositions of place describe exactly where something is — in a room, on a shelf, against a wall. Many match English closely, but a few (especially aan and op) behave differently.

Key rules for Prepositions of Place

in — inside an enclosed space

Use in when something is physically inside something else: a room, a cupboard, a building.

op — on a surface

Use op when something is resting on top of a surface: a table, a shelf, a floor.

aan — attached to or hanging on

Use aan when something is attached to or hanging on a surface, such as a wall, a hook, or a ceiling.

Examples

De kleren liggen in de kast. — The clothes are in the wardrobe.
De sleutels liggen in de la. — The keys are in the drawer.
We zitten in de woonkamer. — We are in the living room.
Het bad staat in de badkamer. — The bath is in the bathroom.
De vaas staat op de tafel. — The vase is on the table.
Het tapijt ligt op de vloer. — The rug is on the floor.
