Practice: Relationship Prepositions

Voorzetsels van relatie

Relationship prepositions connect nouns to show possession, accompaniment, purpose, absence, and cause. Several Dutch prepositions map to more than one English word, so the context always matters.

Key rules for Relationship Prepositions

van โ€” of / from (possession and origin)

Van is one of the most common Dutch prepositions. It expresses possession (like English "of" or "'s"), material, or origin. Unlike English, Dutch does not use an apostrophe-s construction โ€” instead it uses van.

met โ€” with (accompaniment and instrument)

Met means with. Use it to say who accompanies you or what tool or means you use to do something.

voor โ€” for (beneficiary and purpose)

Voor expresses who something is intended for or what purpose it serves. It can also mean "before" in a time or position sense (covered in Time Prepositions).
