Key rules for Question Words

The 6 Core Question Words

Master these first — they cover the vast majority of everyday questions.

Word Order: QW → Verb → Subject

The question word takes position 1. The verb stays in position 2. The subject follows immediately after.

Hoe + Adjective

"Hoe" combines with adjectives to ask about degree, size, age, distance, and time.

Examples

Wie — who — Wie is dat? → Who is that?
Wat — what — Wat doe je? → What are you doing?
Waar — where — Waar woon je? → Where do you live?
Wanneer — when — Wanneer begin je? → When do you start?
Waarom — why — Waarom leer je Nederlands? → Why are you learning Dutch?
Hoe — how — Hoe gaat het? → How are you?
