Scheidbare werkwoorden

Dutch medical vocabulary is full of separable verbs โ€” verbs whose prefix splits off to the end of the main clause. This lesson applies the three separable-verb rules you already know to the healthcare verbs from Thema 7. Use the reference table below to look up any verb, then work through the rule sections for practice.

Key rules for Separable Verbs: Healthcare

Rule 1 โ€” Prefix moves to the end of the main clause

In a main clause the conjugated verb stays in position 2 and the prefix moves to the very end.

Rule 2 โ€” Past participle: ge- between prefix and stem

Add ge- between the separable prefix and the verb stem. When the stem itself starts with an inseparable prefix (ver-, be-, ont-โ€ฆ), no additional ge- is added to the stem.

Rule 3 โ€” Infinitive with te: te goes in the middle

When a separable verb follows te, place te between the prefix and the verb stem.
